Sarcoma Awareness Month 2021

Sarcoma Awareness Month

I don't feel like anyone should follow what I did.

Cardi B

Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with sarcomas, a type of cancer that forms in the connective tissues of the body including fat, blood vessels, nerves, etc. Sarcomas are a rare form of cancer, but no less deadly for their rarity. Research continues on what causes sarcoma and why certain people develop it, and Sarcoma Awareness Month was created to help raise awareness of this disease and all the people it effects.

History of Sarcoma Awareness Month

In November of 2007, a group of advocates came together in Seattle to gather all the sarcoma non-profits under single united effort. Together they determined that the world was in need of a month dedicated to sarcoma awareness. This move was supported by sarctrials.org, a collection of sarcoma doctors who were determined to see sarcomas wiped out once and for all, and so Sarcoma Awareness Month was born.

As part of this effort, a petition was sent to the White House with the intent of gathering 100,000 signatures to officially declare July as Sarcoma Awareness Month. Sarcoma cases increase by 15,000 a year, and while that’s relatively small compared to some forms of cancer, this form is particularly insidious and lethal. Cancer fighters need the support of organizations and events like this to handle the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis, including facing their mortality and care for their family that often arise thanks to the medications they’re on to fight it.

How To Celebrate Sarcoma Awareness Month

Celebrating Sarcoma Awareness Month starts with education. With these forms of cancers being so rare most people don’t know a lot about them, so spend some time researching sarcomas in all their forms. Then move on to studying how one would recognize the symptoms of a sarcoma so you’ll know to check with a doctor if any of these signs pop up.

From that point forward it’s time to start looking to help those in your community who are already facing this disease by connecting with non-profits in your area. Working with these organizations will help spread information, raise awareness, and generate funds for research and other related charities. Get out there and do your part to help relieve the suffering of those who are facing a sarcoma diagnosis, Sarcoma Awareness Month is your perfect opportunity to do so, and then carry it through the rest of the year.

To celebrate Sarcoma Awareness Month, we have special activities and deals!

Plastic Free July 2021

Plastic Free July

Naturally, my stories are about women - I'm a woman. I don't know what the term is for men who write mostly about men. I'm not always sure what is meant by 'feminist.' In the beginning, I used to say, 'Well, of course I'm a feminist.' But if it means that I follow a kind of feminist theory, or know anything about it, then I'm not.

Alice Munro

Recycling is emphasized everywhere, but there’s not enough holiday to indeed enforce the idea of how easy it is to recycle. When it comes to plastic, plastic has become the number one product people use each day, despite how damaging it is to the environment. Plastic Free July is a holiday dedicated to teaching people about the dangers of plastic and challenges people to avoid plastic for a month. Read more to learn about its history and see how you can get started.

History of Plastic Free July

Beginning with just a handful of participants in Western Australia back in 2011, the holiday idea has since grown into its own independent, non-profit organization and an annual event in over 150 countries. They originally began through the organization Earth Carers, a community that focuses on a wide range of environmental issues in the world and educates people about the consequences of hurting the environment. Their vision, after separating and becoming their own organization, is all about a world without plastic waste, and many people caught on to the message they sent out because of their concerns for plastic waste across the globe.

Hence, Plastic Free July is all about encouraging people to be more aware of their plastic use and creating a cleaner world as a result. People can participate in this holiday by avoiding all products that use plastic products in them throughout the whole month of July. This holiday also helps educate people about the different types of plastics out there and what happens in the recycling system when plastic is introduced. This initiative aims to challenge the material system the world has in place when it comes to its economy, focusing its efforts on a global span as well as a personal one. By reducing how much a person uses, they can make a small difference and help others do the same.

How to celebrate Plastic Free July

Begin by avoiding single-use plastic such as straws, water bottles, and plastic produce bags. Use more reusable products such as glass jars, metal utensils, and use metal tin lunch boxes and containers for storage. Avoid highly processed foods and begin using homemade recipes. Learn how to make your products like toothpaste, deodorant, and mouthwash. Share this holiday to your friends online by using the hashtag #plasticfreejuly and see if you can convince them to join you in your efforts to stop using plastic.

To celebrate Plastic Free July, we have special activities and deals!

Celebration Ice Cream Month July 2021

Ice Cream Month

I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice Cream! Butternut Crunch and Rocky Road, Napoleon and Caramel Swirl, there are hundreds of flavors of Ice Cream to sample and flavor, and the hot months of the year are perfect for indulging in this fantastic dairy delight.

Since childhood this treat has defined most of our lives, with the sound of the Ice Cream man driving down the street marking some of the best moments of our lives as we ran screaming down the sidewalk, money in hand, to catch him before they got away.

History of Ice Cream Month

Ice Cream Month was established by the American Dairy association in conjunction with President Ronald Reagan and Walter Dee Huddleston, a Senator from Kentucky. On the backs of this incredibly official declaration, the Ice Cream companies began publicizing the day, encouraging people to go out and enjoy this cold delight as often as possible during the month of July. Ice Cream was first said to be created in Ancient Greece, before the idea of a refrigerator ever came to pass. The so-called “Ice Cream” was incredibly rudimentary, being a mixture of snow honey and fruit, but it was still the beginnings of a great tradition.

The first true Ice Cream was said to be introduced by Catherine de’ Medici in the 16th century. So impressed was Charles I of England (one hundred years after this introduction) that he paid to keep the formula secret, making ice cream a royal prerogative, utterly unobtainable by the common man. The first recorded recipes didn’t exist until the 18th century.

Truly Ice Cream was a treat meant for the most notable of humans, and now we can all enjoy it any day of the year! Ice Cream Month encourages us to be particularly indulgent during the month of July!

How to Celebrate Ice Cream Month

Ice Cream Month has only one appropriate celebration, gorge yourself on Ice Cream at every opportunity! Ok, ok, moderation is necessary even during Ice Cream Month, but there are a bunch of different ways you can enjoy this delicious treat. It goes great with a warm apple pie, and nothing compliments a brownie better than vanilla ice cream. Maybe you prefer a nice scoop of strawberry doused in caramel topping, or that most amazing of all ice cream treats, the Ice Cream Taco!

You can even take the time to make your own ice cream during Ice Cream Month and enjoy the fruits of your labor on a hot summer evening!

Special deals to celebrate Ice Cream Month!

Listicles National Soul Food Month 2021

National Soul Food Month

When I was working on 'Vampires Suck,' I must have watched 'Twilight' and 'New Moon' literally almost every day.

Jenn Proske

4 Heartwarming Soul Food Facts

  1. Humble beginnings

Cooks used their skills to turn cheap and unappealing cuts of meat into delicious meals.

  2. All hail kale

We only recently recognized kale as a "super food." Soul food has depended on it for ages.

  3. "Red" is a flavor

In a soul food restaurant, "red" means a drink — strawberry, cherry or tropical punch. No explanation required.

  4. It is also for the vegan soul

Soul cuisine has embraced many vegan recipes that are spicy, healthy, and delicious! Historically, chefs used seasonal vegetables to cook dishes — with meat thrown in mainly for flavoring.

Food mirrors its history. Soul food, for example, is a cuisine steeped in tradition. It began in the humble kitchens of African-American slaves as a one-pot meal cooked on a shelf over the fireplace. They had little to cook with, but they had memories of their home and love for their family. And the food reflects that. To remind us of this rich culinary tradition, the Culinary Historians of Chicago created National Soul Food Month in June. So while we enjoy these delicious foods, let’s not forget the history.

Garbage Man Day 2021

Garbage Man Day

There's a difference between being a comic and a comedian. A comic is a guy who says funny things, and a comedian is a guy who says things funny, and he has a style and point of view that will last much longer.

Milton Berle

Just imagine what the world would be like if you had to live without the services of your local, friendly garbage professional. There would be mountains of trash piled up outside every home and business. And it would stink!

Fortunately, there is a group of tenacious and dedicated people out there who periodically collect and dispose of your refuse. Garbage Man Day, therefore, is a chance for everyone to stop whatever they are doing and spend a little time appreciating the hard work of these diligent souls.

Learn about Garbage Man Day

Sanitation professionals – also known as garbage men – are vital for functioning, hygienic civilization. But despite their daily toil, they don’t always get the appreciation they deserve for their work.

Garbage Man Day seeks to address this injustice. It is an opportunity for regular people to appreciate the efforts and dedication of committed waste experts in their local community and across the globe.

People who collect waste from homes and businesses go by several names. But whatever you call them, it is hard to imagine life without them. Their job extends well beyond collecting your bags of trash and chucking them in the dumpster truck. They manage waste throughout the entire disposal process, from collections to recycling, to landfill. Increasingly, they also play a role in local environmental support and conservation. With their help, cities can safely rid themselves of potentially dangerous and hazardous waste products and maintain public health.

History of Garbage Man Day

Garbage Man Day is the brainchild of John D. Arwood, the owner of a specialist waste management and portable sanitation firm. He launched his business in 1997 and then used the internet as a way to expand it to multiple locations.

Arwood believes caring for all of the people in the community. Several years into his business venture, he realized that there was a lack of public recognition for the work that his waste disposal staff were doing. Inspired, he personally funded the first Garbage Man Day in 2011. For Arwood, the joy is in seeing communities show their appreciation for these tireless souls who dedicate their days to removing trash from the streets.

Garbage Man Day was officially renamed Waste & Recycling Workers Week in 2019. The organizers give several reasons for this. First, the industry encompasses more than just garbage collection. Those in the waste industry deal with issues as diverse as sanitation and land use. There is also an entire industry dedicated to providing recycling services.

Second, there are many thousands of men and women involved in waste and recycling efforts across the world. The organizers, therefore, felt that the new name would better represent that diversity and avoid any confusion. “Man” in the original context was an abbreviation of “human.” It was not gender-specific.

The focus of Garbage Man Day, therefore, has changed over the years. Still, there is also a high degree of continuity. The organizers will continue to provide the same resources as they always did. Labels and downloadable logos, however, will change to reflect the new branding. There will also be opportunities for people to involve themselves in lobbying for city authorities to issue a proclamation, officially recognizing the day in the calendar.

Garbage Man Day has grown tremendously in popularity over the years. Companies, organizations, and communities from all over the world have become intimately involved in the campaign. Engagement has been so high that many believe that the event will continue to expand in size and scope in the years to come.

Ever the innovator, Arwood recently launched Space Waste Solutions to figure out how to deal with the growing problem of trash orbiting the Earth.

How to celebrate Garbage Man Day

Garbage Man Day celebrates all of the people in our society charged with keeping both you and the environment safe. Traditionally waste and recycling professionals received gifts, and thanks for their work, but what can you do as an individual to celebrate this special occasion?

First, you can show that you care about your local garbage professionals’ wellbeing. Members of the public often go about their business, oblivious to the hardships and dangers that waste disposal workers face. But the fact of the matter is that many work long hours on public streets and highways, continuously exposed to the risks of passing traffic. Motorists, therefore, can observe Garbage Man Day by slowing down as they pass workers.

Garbage disposal is also physically demanding work, especially in hot weather. Some members of the public, therefore, like to provide waste disposal professionals with cold, fresh water to keep them hydrated on hot days. It’s a nice touch that can make a huge difference in how they feel.

The rate of injury in the garbage collection industry is around ten times higher than it is across the rest of the economy. While it is the role of management to mitigate some of these risks, there’s a lot that the general public can do too to prevent harm. Garbage collection professionals, for instance, are at high risk of injury from hazardous materials and sharps. Obviously, poisons, harsh chemicals, and biological waste require professional disposal. But even things like broken glass, needles, shards of metal can put workers at risk. One of your activities in the run-up to Garbage Man Day, therefore, could be to ensure that all your waste is safe for manual handling.

Sometimes, though, the most straightforward methods for showing your appreciation are the best. Nothing says “job well done” better than a simple “thank you” note. You could even go up to your local waste disposal professional in person and let them know that you’re grateful for all the work that they do. It could be the only thanks they get all year.

Garbage Man Day only comes around once per year, so don’t waste it. If possible, try to avoid recycled gestures. Do something memorable—the more love you can dump on those who provide this essential service, the better.

Trashy jokes are always the best, aren’t they?

National Dairy Month

Step with care and great tact, and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act.

Dr. Seuss

4 Dairy Delicious Facts About Milk

  1. Got milk?

Milk is the only food that you can survive on alone. It has every nutrient you need.

  2. The world loves milk

The world's population consumes over 2.1 billion liters every day. That’s enough to fill up 813 Olympic-sized swimming pools.

  3. Cows have friends

Dairy cows are social animals. Like people, they will make friends and bond with some, while avoiding others.

  4. Cows can produce a ton of milk

A cow turns grass into milk within two to three days. Depending on the breed, a cow can make between 25 and 40 liters of milk per day.

This June, celebrate National Dairy Month with your favorite dairy treat. Originally established as a grocery/milk promotion in 1937, National Dairy Month now acts as a reminder of the health benefits that dairy products provide. They contain essential nutrients — including calcium, potassium, vitamin D, and protein. They also reduce the risk of high blood pressure, osteoporosis, and certain cancers, while helping us to better manage our weight. Kick start each day with nutrient-rich dairy products and start your summer on a healthy note.

Why Do We Celebrate National Taffy Day?

National Taffy Day

The greatest weariness comes from work not done.

Eric Hoffer

National Taffy Day Activities

  1. See it get made

Watching taffy being made is not to be missed! Most taffy factories offer guided tours so that you can see how taffy is heated in huge copper kettles, and then slowly cooled by hand on cold marble slabs and then put on a machine that now does the pulling.

  2. Indulge in a taffy binge

Gorging on candy for National Taffy Day might not seem like the best advice, but then again it is the custom for other holidays (not naming any names)… so having a few taffies is a great way to celebrate!

  3. Make your own

The best way to celebrate National Taffy Day is to actually make your own! Not only is this a fun activity, but it also means that you will have a good supply of taffy to give out to your friends and family. Look up a recipe on the web and get cooking (and pulling.)

Why We Love National Taffy Day

  1. We love to watch it get made

Not only is taffy a delicious candy, enjoyed by all ages, but making it is also a real upper body workout! Nowadays taffy is made by machines, but in the past, or if you are making it at home, you use the ‘taffy pull’ to add air to the taffy mixture. This is what gives taffy its distinctive texture.

  2. It makes us nostalgic

We love that tasting taffy takes most Americans back to childhood memories of blissful summers by the sea. As taffy is traditionally sold at boardwalks, it has been a staple of American seaside resort towns for over one hundred years.

  3. The flavors are endless

Taffy has survived the test of time because of its unique texture, which comes in almost every flavor imaginable; from vanilla, maple, mint and watermelon, to raspberry, banana and licorice… or anything else you can think of!

On May 23, we celebrate our favorite sweet and chewy treat on National Taffy Day. Taffy has a long history as one of America’s native sweets. Common lore has it that in the 1880s, a Jersey Shore candy shop got flooded, soaking the shop’s taffy stock with Atlantic salt water. On a lark, the owner sold the candy as “saltwater taffy” and an American delicacy was born! Today it’s sold on boardwalks up and down the Eastern seaboard of the U.S. and has even found its way to landlocked candyshops. National Taffy Day is a day to indulge in the sweet pastime of unwrapping that twisty wax paper and popping a chewy bit of taffy into your mouth. Yum!
