Did you know that there’s a holiday dedicated to catfish? That’s right, and it’s called Catfish Month. Want to learn more about the creation of this tasty holiday? Read more to learn about its history and see how you can participate in Catfish Month.

History of Catfish Month

The first mention of this holiday was in August of 1984 when President Ronald Reagan announced to the nation that there would be a national holiday dedicated to the catfish. Since his announcement of the holiday, the Catfish Institute (TCI), The Jackson-based location of the U.S. Farm-Raised Catfish industry, works throughout the year to promote the work, the farmers it represents and the impact they have on local economy. Catfish is one of America’s largest aquaculture products, and each year, a farmer is awarded “Catfish of the Year” as an exemplary example of what an American farmer looks like.

Catfish Month aims to educate people about the agricultural importance of catfish in the economy. As they have been farmed or fished for food for hundreds of years in Africa, Asia, and South America, catfish is considered a delicacy in some parts of the world as well as a tasty meal in many parts of the United States. Catfish contains low levels of omega-3 fatty acids and a much higher proportion of omega-6 fatty acids, making it nutritious to eat. It’s a stable in many parts of the world, and in the United States, it’s considered a small part of the American tradition.

How to Celebrate Catfish Month

If you’re aching for some catfish, try out this catfish recipe. First, rinse catfish fillets under cold water or put the catfish in an hour-long soak in buttermilk to remove the fish flavor, then wash it off and dry it with paper towels. Then, in a tray, pour milk over the top of the catfish. In another tray, combine 1 cup of cornmeal, 3 teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of pepper, and 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper. Remove the fillets from the milk and coat in cornmeal mixture. Let it dry for 5 minutes. Next, in a large skillet, heat the oil and butter up on medium to high heat. Cook the catfish 5 to 7 minutes on each side. Cook until golden brown, drain off excess oil, let it cool for a few minutes, then serve. 1. Have a Spider-Man movie marathon

   Depending how far back in time you want to go and which producers/directors you prefer, you could easily spend an entire day watching movie adaptations of Spider-Man comics. Perhaps you and your friends could watch and compare the latest releases, both Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man and discuss which version is better.

2. Throw a Spider-Man party

   Invite your friends over, decorate the house and get the silly string web-slinging devices ready 'cause it’s party time! To really make your party stand out, try some Spidey-themed food like deviled eggs with paprika shaken into the shape of a spider. To keep the adults happy, try making the Spider-Man cocktail mixed with cherry and raspberry liqueurs, tequila and a sprinkling of pop rocks.

3. Parkour!

   Ever wanted to leap and fly like Spider-Man? While swinging through New York City with a series of webs isn’t quite realistic, the growing trend of parkour can be done, right here and now. A mix of gymnastics and dancing, building up your parkour skills means flipping, sliding and jumping through the city just like Spidey.

   When comic book movies had a resurgence in the early 21st century, Spider-Man led the way. The 2002 release of Spider-Man resulted in a gross income of nearly $822 million worldwide. Its sequel in 2004 raked in almost $784 million while the third installment in 2007 broke all previous records with gross income just shy of $891 million worldwide.

3. He teaches us great life lessons

   From the iconic quote “with great power comes great responsibility” to learning humility, Spider-Man has bestowed some core life lessons on generations of fans. His ability to not take credit for the good he does and his commitment to always be himself serve as models for us all.

History of World Watercolor Month

World Watercolor Month was founded by Charlie O’Shields, creator of Doodlewash®. He realized after looking at the yearly calendar that of all the forms of art that had a day or month dedicated to them, watercolor was just plain left out!

Through his efforts, July was established as World Watercolor Month once and for all! Watercolor painting has a history stretching back to pre-history, with the earliest examples gracing the cave walls where ancient man used to live. Since that time art has played an important role in our society, bringing us together, inspiring us, and lifting our hearts during our darkest days.

Celebration Pet Fire Safety Day July 15, 2021

The combined efforts of the Kennel Club and ADT Security Services led to the first Pet Fire Safety Day being held in the late 2000s. The idea behind the event is to make pet owners aware of the hazards their beloved cat, dog, or other animals could pose in the home with regard to fire.

Many fires are caused by pets, especially when they are left alone in a property and the intention is that by highlighting the dangers to owners it can help in preventing them.

Pet owners should take advantage of the day to discuss who in a home is responsible for helping a pet escape in the event of a blaze and carry out some practice escape drills.

They can also use Kennel Club advice to pet proof their home against fires and install a pet alert notice in a window for use by emergency services.

Sarcoma Awareness Month 2021

Every year thousands of people are diagnosed with sarcomas, a type of cancer that forms in the connective tissues of the body including fat, blood vessels, nerves, etc. Sarcomas are a rare form of cancer, but no less deadly for their rarity. Research continues on what causes sarcoma and why certain people develop it, and Sarcoma Awareness Month was created to help raise awareness of this disease and all the people it effects.

History of Sarcoma Awareness Month

In November of 2007, a group of advocates came together in Seattle to gather all the sarcoma non-profits under single united effort. Together they determined that the world was in need of a month dedicated to sarcoma awareness. This move was supported by sarctrials.org, a collection of sarcoma doctors who were determined to see sarcomas wiped out once and for all, and so Sarcoma Awareness Month was born.

As part of this effort, a petition was sent to the White House with the intent of gathering 100,000 signatures to officially declare July as Sarcoma Awareness Month. Sarcoma cases increase by 15,000 a year, and while that’s relatively small compared to some forms of cancer, this form is particularly insidious and lethal. Cancer fighters need the support of organizations and events like this to handle the difficulties of a cancer diagnosis, including facing their mortality and care for their family that often arise thanks to the medications they’re on to fight it.

How To Celebrate Sarcoma Awareness Month

Celebrating Sarcoma Awareness Month starts with education. With these forms of cancers being so rare most people don’t know a lot about them, so spend some time researching sarcomas in all their forms. Then move on to studying how one would recognize the symptoms of a sarcoma so you’ll know to check with a doctor if any of these signs pop up.

From that point forward it’s time to start looking to help those in your community who are already facing this disease by connecting with non-profits in your area. Working with these organizations will help spread information, raise awareness, and generate funds for research and other related charities. Get out there and do your part to help relieve the suffering of those who are facing a sarcoma diagnosis, Sarcoma Awareness Month is your perfect opportunity to do so, and then carry it through the rest of the year.

Recycling is emphasized everywhere, but there’s not enough holiday to indeed enforce the idea of how easy it is to recycle. When it comes to plastic, plastic has become the number one product people use each day, despite how damaging it is to the environment. Plastic Free July is a holiday dedicated to teaching people about the dangers of plastic and challenges people to avoid plastic for a month. History of Plastic Free July

Beginning with just a handful of participants in Western Australia back in 2011, the holiday idea has since grown into its own independent, non-profit organization and an annual event in over 150 countries. They originally began through the organization Earth Carers, a community that focuses on a wide range of environmental issues in the world and educates people about the consequences of hurting the environment. Their vision, after separating and becoming their own organization, is all about a world without plastic waste, and many people caught on to the message they sent out because of their concerns for plastic waste across the globe.

Hence, Plastic Free July is all about encouraging people to be more aware of their plastic use and creating a cleaner world as a result. People can participate in this holiday by avoiding all products that use plastic products in them throughout the whole month of July. This holiday also helps educate people about the different types of plastics out there and what happens in the recycling system when plastic is introduced. This initiative aims to challenge the material system the world has in place when it comes to its economy, focusing its efforts on a global span as well as a personal one. By reducing how much a person uses, they can make a small difference and help others do the same.

How to celebrate Plastic Free July

Begin by avoiding single-use plastic such as straws, water bottles, and plastic produce bags. Use more reusable products such as glass jars, metal utensils, and use metal tin lunch boxes and containers for storage. Avoid highly processed foods and begin using homemade recipes. Learn how to make your products like toothpaste, deodorant, and mouthwash. Share this holiday to your friends online by using the hashtag #plasticfreejuly and see if you can convince them to join you in your efforts to stop using plastic.
